Dr. Emad Habib, a professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette and director of the Institute for Coastal & Water Research (ICaWR) and the Louisiana Watershed Flood Center, explains that his team has conducted a series of studies examining various dredging scenarios along the Vermilion River. The research uses detailed computer modeling to compare how water levels respond with and without dredging during different storm scenarios.

Habib explained that the Vermilion does not behave like a simple river flowing continuously in one direction. Depending on water levels and conditions throughout the watershed, water can move in different directions, making it important to study potential projects individually before work begins.
